It Is Not Only About Email Marketing

While the majority of the policies within GDPR are about communicating with your customers and sending marketing materials, it is not all about internet marketing. You will have to make sure that all the people on your mailing list are happy to stay on the list. Even if they have confirmed their subscription and opted in before, it might be a good idea to send them a follow up email to make sure you are not going to get GDPR related complaints in the future from those who no longer want to be on your email list.

While you will have to let your website visitors know about how you use cookies on your site and direct them to your Privacy Policy for more information, it is not all about cookies. You might be using traffic analytics or other internet marketing software that uses customer information to determine your target audience. You will have to cover this in your cookie and privacy policy, as well.

It Is Not Only About Your Website

While many online marketing experts might tell you that GDPR only applies to your website, this is not true. It should be implemented in your entire online marketing sales funnel; your ads, your blogs, social media accounts, and even your phone calls. If you keep records of your customers’ orders, bank details, and personal information, you have to make sure you keep the information safe and confidential to comply with the General Data Protection Regulations.

When you are sending out leaflets or employ a company to call your customers back, you should also comply with the regulations. Every marketing activity, including collecting business cards at a networking event is regulated. If you are a business coach, the information you hold about a startup business has to be kept safe.

What About GDPR and Social Media?

This is a grey area when it comes to GDPR. You might want to add a policy link to your Facebook business pages, and – if you are building a list online – you can also cover the bases by asking people to double opt in. Still, when using your social media accounts for marketing and research, you will have to seek professional guidance on what is allowed and what should be avoided.
