If you are just getting started with promoting your business online, you might come across controversial information about how to get started. Some people will swear on search engine optimisation, others will tell you that you need content and keywords, while some people suggest that you can build a successful venture online simply by using social media. There’s so much confusing information out there about sales funnel designs and you will have a hard time navigating through all the information. Below you will find five of the most common small business digital marketing myths and the facts so you can start your campaigns without misconceptions.

1. You Can’t Win Unless You Have a Huge Budget

While having a marketing budged might help you get the word out about your business, you will also have to make sure that you are not spending too much on testing your campaigns. When it comes to digital marketing, small businesses will need to establish a clear brand message that will set them apart from the competition. This way, you can work smarter and not harder, and laser-target the right audience from the beginning. You can get started with social media promotions for free, or optimise your pages for search engines, instead of bidding on expensive keywords to get noticed.

2. Email Marketing Equals Self Promotion and Spamming, and Is Impossible After the Latest GDPR Regulations

While you might be receiving a lot of emails that are not relevant to you, it doesn’t mean that you should not set up an autoresponder to keep in touch with your subscribers and your current customers. The key is permission and creating a GDPR compliant autoresponder sequence, which allows people to opt in and out with one click of a button. If you ask for permission first, and clearly state the communication your audience will receive from you, it is unlikely that your emails will be rerported as a spam. GDPR should not make you panic, instead just follow the rules.

3. There Are Set-and-forget Solutions Out There

Unfortunately, you will need to actively manage your digital marketing campaigns to get results. You can’t simply set up an automation and leave it there. Markets change, and your competition might come up with a new strategy that will make your marketing less effective. While you can create a sales funnel that will help you automate some of your small business online marketing tasks, you will always have to keep an eye on the results and your conversion rates.

4. Content Only Matters When It Comes To Keywords

Back in 2011, when I started online marketing as a copywriter, I found it hard to compete with content mills in the UK and abroad. They used spinning and rewriting as a main method, and many website owners fell for their cheap packages. Fast forward 2023, the whole game changed, and search engines got smarter. They figured out that many sites had duplicate content, and low quality articles and blog posts written by bots or non-native writers. Guess what happened to the online business owners who wanted to save a few bucks? Their sites disappeared of got banned from search engines. They ended up coming to me for advice on how to get their old positions and ranking back.

5. Online Marketing Is a Numbers’ Game

Only part of this statement is true. Of course, if you are only getting two visitors to your page, you will need a 50 percent conversion rate to make a sale. This is almost impossible. Therefore, you should keep an eye on your website statistics in Google Search Console and your own host/platform. However, when you are trying to promote your brand online, you can have the advantage of targeting the right people. Compared with a TV commercial that aims at everyone sitting in front of the telly, you can define who your ideal customer is. Therefore, quality is often more important than numbers. Just imagine someone promising you 500 twitter followers to your local bakery’s page. You are located in East London, and you get followers from Morrocco and India. What are the chances that these followers will every buy buns from you. None. Zero. Nada. If you would like to make your online marketing methods work for you,  it is important that you pay attention to the quality of content, define your audience, and your unique selling proposition. Your sales funnel needs to be tailored to your market and your customer’s needs and wants.
